Outdoor and Adventure Therapy
Outdoor and Adventure Therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses nature and adventurous activities to promote psychological and physical well-being. It combines traditional therapeutic techniques with experiential activities in natural settings. Outdoor and Adventure Therapy offers a holistic approach to healing and personal development, leveraging the benefits of nature and adventure to support mental health and well-being.
Key Elements:
1. Nature-Based Setting: Therapy sessions are conducted in outdoor environments such as forests, mountains, lakes, or parks. The natural setting itself is seen as a healing element.
2. Outdoor and Adventure Activities: Activities often include hiking, bushcraft, fishing, camping, and other physical challenges. These activities are designed to push individuals out of their comfort zones and promote personal growth.
3. Experiential Learning: Participants engage in hands-on activities that require problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience. This experiential learning helps individuals apply these skills to their everyday lives.
4. Therapeutic Techniques: Therapists may incorporate traditional counseling methods, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), alongside adventure activities. Sessions often involve reflection and discussion to process experiences and emotions.
Benefits:
1. Physical Health: Engaging in outdoor activities improves physical fitness, which can have a positive impact on mental health.
2. Mental Well-being: Exposure to nature and physical activity can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. The calming effect of natural environments and the endorphins released during exercise contribute to this improvement.
3. Personal Growth: Facing and overcoming challenges in a supportive environment can boost self-esteem, confidence, and resilience.
4. Social Skills: Working with your therapist in challenging environments increases communication development, cooperation, and problem solving skills.
5. Mindfulness and Relaxation: The natural environment encourages mindfulness, allowing individuals to focus on the present moment and develop relaxation techniques.
6. Connection with Nature: Developing a deeper connection with nature can foster a sense of responsibility for the environment and enhance overall well-being.

Session Example 1
Here you will experience a 1h and 30min session in a local forest park. The session will begin with a light walk to a designated spot where we will put up two hammocks, light a small fire to boil water for nettle tea or a good old fashioned Barry's Tea/Coffee. We will use this session to explore goals and aspects of your life you want support with. This process is stimulated by you engaging in the fire lighting, camp set up and taking in natures surroundings.

Session Sample 2
Here I will meet you at a designated walking trail or mountain range. I will bring all the equipment you need. We set off on a 1;30/2 hike. Locations typically are Knockma Woods, Maumturks, the Burren and other mountain ranges inside Co. Clare and Galway.

Session Example 3
Young people excel when introduced to natural surrounding and it can be a great way to reconnect the family and establishing new boundaries created on mutual respect. In this 1h 30min session I will teach you, the Parent/Guardian, some tools and techniques to managing emerging issues at home. This will also be an opportunity for you to have a support and informative break, while also leaning some fun, immersive techniques that will engage young people in positive dialogue and relationship building.
